The demand for appliance repair this year couldn’t be greater.
After a few slow months to start the hear, the uncertainty the pandemic caused in the spring coupled with a traditional slow tax season work dropped off in March and April. We were worried but with the company’s savings and Payroll Protection loans all staffers were kept fully employed. De Anza Appliance takes COVID seriously and even in mid-March began implementing protections for our associates and customers. As an essential business in Santa Clara County we needed to stay open to ensure the safety and sanitation of the home and laundry services. Partnerships with larger manufacturers like Electrolux and Frigidaire allowed their warranty customers to receive same and next day service.
Come Memorial Day consumer confidence began to return while stay at home orders pushed households to use appliances more frequently uncovering repairs needed that may were overlooked. The first heatwave struck stressing refrigerators. Like a light switch the team went from filling 80% of our daily capacity to booking a 100% capacity a week out.
New partnerships in late 2019 and 2020 with luxury brands including Hestan, True Residential, and Viking brought new customers seeking both warranty and out-of-warranty repairs on boutique products. Expansions North to San Bruno in San Mateo County brought new customers in the door and dropping service call rates to the Fremont, Newark and Union City of Alameda County captured more business with our headquarters moving to North Santa Clara several years ago.
As the prolonged summer and extended stay-at-home orders waned through the summer the first fires hit in our backyard in the East San Jose Foothills and the Santa Cruz Mountains. Ash clouds coupled with the extended heat put further pressure on refrigerators. Grid failures due to the electrical storms and fires played havoc with appliance electronics. A week out turned to two weeks out as property manager clients even noted an incredible uptick in failures from their tenants.
According to property manager and homeowner clients found big box stores were suffering from prolonged backorders and cancellations of new appliances. Shortages started with rushes on stand-alone-freezers and top mounted refrigerators at the beginning of the pandemic. As manufacturing facilities temporarily shut down and shipping ground to a halt common entry level cooking and laundry appliances also experienced shortages. De Anza Appliance started recommending partners like Airport Appliance, Appliance Leaders, Davie’s Appliance, and University Electric. Clients couldn’t always get their first choice of brand or confirguation but found success in finding other lines like our newer partner Beko in stock.
Stresses began hitting manufacturers and parts distributors. Routine parts started to disappear from inventory and lead times to replenish grew longer and longer. De Anza Appliance stocked up on key dryer maintenance parts, cooktop components, oven ignitors, and key refrigerator components.
With a tech taking long-term medical leave pre pandemic, significant increased demand for repairs, expanded service area, and new manufacturer partnerships it’s time to grow the team. De Anza Appliance is seeking an experienced tech now with at least two years field experience or a year’s field experience with trade school completion. A top candidate will have been in the trade for at least five years, sealed system experience, and familiarity with most of the product lines De Anza Appliance services.
In addition to hiring an experienced technician now. De Anza Appliance will look towards onboarding an apprentice technician (or second experienced vet) and a new office staff member in the first quarter of 2021. We’re interviewing a new manufacturing partner as you read this article and depending where our new hire is based from and when our tech on medical leave returns, further expansion is underway to meet our manufacturer’s regional needs.
2020 wasn’t the year most of us hoped for and many of us struggled through but we’re happy to be here and excited to offer several new employees opportunities for new careers for life.
