Hosting Thanksgiving, Check Your Cooking Appliances Now!

October 25, 2024

Large Thanksgiving gatherings can stress out even the most seasoned of home cooks. Get to know your appliances before your holiday so your not stuck with last minute repairs.

Between casseroles, pies, and the turkey; your oven creates the centerpieces of your holidays, make sure it keeps in tip-top shape.

Self Cleaning the Oven

You might be tempted to self-clean your oven. Do so at your own risk. When the self clean process starts your oven locks and then superheats for an extended period of time. The extreme temperature over time carbonizes debris and allows an easy sweep out when cool. If you interupt the cycle or the oven overheats you might experience a lock out. Thermal fuses protect your oven from overheating may trip or fail. Good news these failures protect you and your home from potential fires, bad news you might be withou the use of your oven the week of Thanksgiving. Most appliance repair companies book a week out in the holiday season (week of Thanksgiving into the early New Years).

Self clean a month ahead of the big day just in case. If it fails, you can request appliance repair from De Anza Appliance online.

In case you want to skip the safe clean. Good Housekeeping offers their suggestions using some easy to get cleaners and materials

Oven Temperatures Off

Last year we wrote an article about what to do if your oven temperature is off? Check out the article and try the Pilsbury Biscuit test and details for what an oven calibration entails. If the biscuits come out raw or burnt request an oven calibration. Calibrations currently run $310 for single ovens or $390 for double wall ovens.

Check your Ventilation Filters

If any of your dishes require a high heat on your cooktop you want to make sure your ventilation is flowing to keep the air clean and the fire alarm off. There are three type of filters that all clean a little differently.

  • Charcoal Filters are generally disposable and should be changed once a year especially if you do a lot of high grease cooking. You can reach out to the Appliance Parts Company in San Jose with your model and serial number to pick up from their downtown location. If you’re scheduling an appliance repair with De Anza Appliance for any other appliance have your brand, model, and serial ready and we can check if your filters can be ordered and brought to your home with service.
  • Stainless Steel Baffles are meant to be cleaned often and are usually dishwasher safe. When hot grease hits the stainless steel baffles it cools and coagulates. Check your use and care manual for the best cleaners and instructions for maintenance.
  • Grease Capture Cups are similar to stainless steel baffles. The system captures grease and cleaning allows maintenance without replacement of the filtration system. Many grease capture systems require a cleaning agent to spray into the fan, run the ventilation at high. Check your use and care manuale for recommended cleaners and where to apply cleaning agents.

Cleaning your Cooktop and Oven Surfaces

A good host keeps a clean kitchen (and house) to impress their guests. Many overzealous cleaners spray water or cleaners on gas burners on the cooktop or the electronic controls on the oven. Liquids sprayed directly on an oven’s control panel can short out the user interface or main board. Liquids can temporarily clog gas orificies creating lack of flame or uneven flame on cooktops. Aggressive cleaning may knock gas ignitors out-of-alignment. When the ignitors shift out of alignment the ignitor sparks but doesn’t catch the gas. If you encounter any cleaning mishaps monitor for a day, water may evaporator. If the failure continues request service for your cooktop, oven, or range.

Best to clean your appliances by applying cleaner to your cloth or paper towel and then start the wipe down. HGTV gives you the best cleaning solutions you can muster with household items and their top products to buy.
